Google is making its artificial intelligence (AI) even smarter with a cool new feature for Gemini Advanced: it now has a memory that sticks around! This is a big step that could make talking to AI feel way more natural, like chatting with a friend. But, like with any new tech, it also brings up some important questions about privacy and doing things the right way.

As AI that can chat with us gets better and better, giving them a good memory is super important. Google wants to change how we use AI by making Gemini Advanced remember past chats. This way, it can give you answers that make more sense and are just for you. Imagine if your AI pal could actually remember what you talked about last time! Pretty cool, right? But, this awesome tech also means we need to think about keeping things safe and private.

The world of chatbots is getting HUGE! Experts at places like Gartner say that tons more people started using AI chatbots in 2023. This is partly because of new stuff like AI memory. It’s a race to be the best in AI, and Google is making a smart move by adding memory to Gemini Advanced. They’re trying to stand out from big names like OpenAI, Microsoft, and everyone else working on AI.

An AI That Remembers: No More Digital Forgetfulness!

You know how most chatbots used to be kinda forgetful? They couldn’t remember what you talked about before. Every time you started a new chat, it was like meeting for the first time. You had to repeat everything, which could get annoying, right?

Google wants to fix this “digital amnesia” with Gemini Advanced. Now, their AI can have a conversation memory. This means it can keep track of what you’ve said before and change its answers based on your past chats. The goal is simple: make talking to AI smoother and more helpful by giving you suggestions that are spot-on for what you need.

How Does Gemini Advanced’s Memory Work?

One of the best things about this new memory feature is how easy it is to use. If you’re signed up for Gemini Advanced with a Google One AI Premium plan, guess what? You don’t have to do anything to turn it on! It just works automatically in the background, like magic!

Always Ready to Remember: For More Natural Chats

  • Every time you start a new chat or jump back into one you were having, Gemini Advanced automatically remembers what you were talking about before. It’s like it has a little notebook of your conversations!
  • You’ll quickly see that Gemini Advanced uses the context from your past chats.
    • For Example: Imagine you’re working on a coding project with Gemini, and you come back later with a question. It will remember what you were doing and help you out way better. No more repeating yourself over and over!

Keeping Things Private and in Your Control

With everyone worrying about privacy these days, Google says they’re being open and giving you control. Gemini Advanced will tell you when it’s using past chats to give you an answer. Plus, they’ll give you ways to manage its memory.

According to an article from Android Police, Google is planning to add advanced options to control what Gemini Advanced remembers. These tools will let you decide what info it keeps in mind.

Manage Your “Chat Recall” History and Settings

You can find the memory settings in your regular Google “My Activity” settings.

Here’s how to see what Gemini is remembering and take charge:

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Click on Settings.
  3. Select Saved info.
  4. You’ll see an option called “Info you’ve asked Gemini to remember”.
  • Turn this option on or off whenever you want. It’s your memory to control!
  • You can also look at and delete past chats that are saved right there in this section. Clean slate time? No problem!

Basically, “Chat Recall” is on when you start, but if you want to change things up or clear your chat history, it’s all easy to find in the settings.

Google’s Got Competition!

Google isn’t the only one making smart AI. OpenAI, with ChatGPT, and Microsoft, with Copilot, are also working on AI that can remember things. It’s a race to build the smartest AI!

When Google showed off Project Astra at the Google I/O 2024 conference, it was clear that AI memory is a huge deal. Tech companies think memory is the key to making AI that’s more helpful and personal. They want AI to guess what you need and fit right into your daily life.

Cool Tech, But What’s the Catch?

Memory in AI is a big leap forward, but it also makes us think about some big questions. An AI that remembers can make things way easier, but it could also bring some risks:

  • It could collect a lot of super-personal data, which means we need to have strong rules about privacy.
  • There’s a chance it could make AI biases worse, because it learns from past chats, and those chats might not always be fair.
  • Systems that know us really well could potentially be used to trick or manipulate us. Yikes!

How do we make sure AI is smart and helpful, but also does the right thing and keeps our private info safe? The answer to that will decide if this tech is a real win or if it’s a bit risky for the future.

With Gemini Advanced, Google is moving towards AI that’s smoother and easier to use. This memory thing could change how we use computers and AI forever. But, it also reminds us that every time tech gets better, we have to be responsible. Companies, governments, and all of us need to work together to figure out the limits for the AI of tomorrow.

What do you think? Is AI memory super cool or a little bit creepy? How much memory should AI have? And how can we make sure AI uses its memory in a good way? Let’s keep thinking and talking about this important topic!
